Visiting The Scottish Outer Hebrides/Western Isles

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The Outer Hebrides/Western Isles are a group of more than 400 islands located just off the north west coast of Scotland.  The islands of the Inner & Outer Hebrides have been inhabited since the Mesolithic times and throughout their history the culture and language has been greatly influenced by numerous different races and today the culture of the Hebrides is a blend of Norse, Celtic, Scottish and English influences. The majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and although many talk in English, it is often their second language. In the past vacations in the Outer Hebrides were only for the rich folk and those folk who had plenty of time. Today it is much, much to get to the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides, you can travel by car and ferry or even fly to a choice of airports on the islands. Unfortunately you can not get all of the way by train though it is possible to travel coast and then travel by bus for the remainder of the trip. Sometimes the only hiccup that can happen is sorting a place to stay especially if  you are looking for Harris group accommodation which is more often than not fully booked up.

One of the main reasons people travel to the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles is that the the landscape and culture of the islands are interestingly unique.  Dotted along the south west coast of the Isle of Harris you will discover some of the most stunningly beautiful golden sandy beaches in all of Scotland, and many people say the United Kingdom. Every once in a while you will see a standing stone on Harris but it is on Lewis that you will find the most incredible collection of standing stones at Callanish not a huge distance from Stornoway the only town in the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides. The Calanais standing stones is said to be second to only Stonehenge in England.

Deciding which island to stay on, the Isle of Lewis or Isle of Harris is often a difficult decision and more and more folk are settling to spend a short time on both. B&B accommodation on Lewis is frequently more plentiful than Harris accommodation, to avoid any problems make sure you book early.

B&B accommodation in Stornoway is is usually available but again to be safe book early. Virtually all accommodation in the Hebrides is of a very high standard and the hospitality is unbeatable and the local people helpful and friendly.

Besides the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris there are a few other isles that are relatively easy to visit. The most commonly visited are North and South Uist, Benbecula and Barra and you will find a ferry which runs from Harris to North Uist at Leverburgh on South Harris.

Choosing Your Perfect Vacation Destination

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Trying to find a good destination for a future trip is sometimes difficult and there are many things to take into consideration before buying the tickets. Considering of your preferences, the options you can make seem endless. You could want to travel to a destination close of your home or you could dream about going many miles away. Even after you actually find a destination you like, there are other things to think about.

The issue that first has to be thought is the amount of cash you have to buy your trip. If you do not have enough, you might need to start saving something or making some extra cash. You could always try to make money online. There seems to be a growing interest in this thing and you should try it so you get the funds needed to pay for the perfect vacation.

After having solved the problem of money, you have to figure out what you would like to do and where you would like to go. This will decrease the number of options there are for a perfect destination. You might have to consult some guides or travel agents to find the perfect place for you, but finally, you will get what you need.

If you like to do physical activity or sports in your free time, there are plenty of options to take into consideration. Depending on your preferences, you might choose a place where you can hike or climb. Even if this place is somewhat far from your city, you should not feel discouraged. Just do not forget to pack your old brown boots.

Maybe you like more quiet and calm sports. Golf is a very popular activity among many people that go on vacations. They usually go where there is a nice green course and some stunning scenery along. If you want to learn how to break 80 in your trip, the decision is yours.

Alternatively, you can just go from place to place and visit many destinations in the same trip. Many people prefer to see and discover more places in a short amount of time. If you think you are one of them, plan carefully, so you have enough time to visit each place.

No matter where you decide to take your next trip, you should always do some research about the destination, since some are more appropriate, while others are not so easy to reach. Finding the one that is right for you may not be so easy, but you will be rewarded when you get there.
